Who Was Thirumoolar?

Let’s learn more about Thirumoolar Siddhar. Who was Thirumoolar? It’s challenging to make this brief, but I’ll try!

Sundaran from Southern India (Tamil) studied with guru Agasthiar in Pothigai Region. Agasthiar was a Siddhar, Saint, and Rishi. His contributions to Tamil literature are immense in the field of Medicine, Sithandham, Vedhantham, and Physiology.

Here, the story varies. Some stories say that what happened next occurred while he was en route to meet Guru Agasthiyar (meaning he was somewhere north of Tamil at the time). Other stories say he was going to meet his friend a cowherd (Moolan).

Either way, on his travels he is in a village named Sathanoor when he finds a group of cows crying near the dead body of their master Moolan. Sundaran used his powers from his years of study as a SivaYogi to safely keep his body inside a tree hole and entered his soul into Moolan’s body.

When the cows saw their master Moolan alive, they were no longer distressed. By this compassionate act, he was obligated to extend his stay in Moolan’s body. He led the cows to their village, to Moolan’s wife, and returned to the tree where he kept his body to find it gone. He understood it was the intention of Lord Shiva to deliver the essence of the Vedas and Agamas (Tantras) through the medium of Moolan because in this body he could speak in colloquial Tamil, to be understood by laypersons.

Thirumoolar

He became known as Thirumoolar, adopting the cowherd’s name “Moolan” and adding “Thiru” as a prefix of honor and respect, becoming known as Thirumoolar. This knowledge gives us greater perspective in our yoga practices.
