Thirumoolar’s Instructions to Yogis Verses 85, 725, 507 and 2013
In Thirumoolar’s Ashtanga Therapeutic Yoga, we study the Tirumantiram (Thirumantiram), which instructs yogis on the power of love and devotion, the efficacy of mantras, the connection between the breath and mind, caring for the physical body, and how the subtle body leads to the Divine. These instructions are peppered throughout the verses, but I wanted to share 4 of them.
Verse 2013 instructs students to practice yoga, as this helps us connect to Spirit
All the world may well attain the bliss I have received
If the name of the Lord chanted by the great ones is repeated
Within the heart will arise a thrilling unstruck sound
Which, when practiced, will lead to realization. (85)
Time was when I despised the body;
But then I saw the God within
And the body, I realized, is the Lord’s temple and so I began preserving it
With care infinite. (725)
You may not for Yoga inclined be,
But if your Guru Illumined teaches you,
You may yet accomplish it;
And so persevere In lives several;
And seeing you thus abored, Sivva’s Form will in your thought arise. (2013)
He Who Gives to Sivajnanis will Become a Jnani He who gives to Gods, Guru, And the Goodly ones Who are of passions rid,
Will a Jnani become, Imparting Jnana appropriate to disciples several;
For him is not the burning hell,
That is destined for perpetrators Of deadly sins five, Who know not consequences dire (507)
